This week, The New York Times reported that nearly half of American women at 30 have never had a child. But by 45, 88 percent are mothers. Women aren’t opting out of motherhood. They’re arriving on their own schedule.
I read that and thought: that’s my story.
My Version of Fashionably Late
I became a first-time mom at 41 after years of endometriosis and fertility challenges. I didn’t plan to wait this long. But here we are, and I’m grateful every single day.
This Is Happening Everywhere
This isn’t just a story about women in cities putting off babies for careers. The Times data shows birthrates rising for women 35 and older across income levels, education levels, and demographics. The delay is real, and so is the arrival.
And yet the conversation still hasn’t caught up.
The Raised Eyebrow
When I told people I’d had my baby at 41, reactions ranged from genuine joy to barely concealed surprise. In Latino culture especially, there’s still a quiet expectation that motherhood happens young — or something must have gone wrong.
What the Numbers Can’t Tell You
Later motherhood comes with its own challenges — the exhaustion is real, the juggling act is real. But so is the perspective. The patience. The appreciation for small moments you might have rushed through at a younger age.
